Food Truck Spotlight: Bacon Bacon

14 Nov

Our Spotlight this week is from Jim Angelus of Bacon Bacon. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Jim!

Q: What sparked the interest to start Bacon Bacon?

A: I wanted to stay in the business I love, the restaurant business, but more importantly be able to be a family guy. At the time I had a newborn girl and saw a future of ridiculous restaurant hours. I thought BB would be a great little lunch business.

Q: What kind of food does your truck serve and what inspired that choice of cuisine?

A: Burgers, Grilled Cheese, Fried Chicken, Pork Fries, Pork Belly, Bouquets of Bacon, chocolate bacon. I thought there wasn’t a food truck that was serving american comfort food. What says it more than Bacon? Breakfast Lunch & Dinner.

Q: What do you recommend first time visitors to try at your truck?

A: I’m a burger guy, so I love our burger. The staff loves the chicken and the tourists love the grilled cheese because it’s been on a few Food Shows. You must get the fries, hand cut daily and tossed with fresh herbs and Parmesan.

Q: What’s the best part about serving at the SF State campus?

A: I love the demographic and diversity of the students on campus. I know what it’s like to be in college on a budget and It’s super flattering to see students spend their $$ on my food.

Q: What’s something most people don’t know about your truck?

A: I think there is a general misunderstanding that trucks, show up and serve food, with out realizing the several hours of prep before and after the shift. Most people don’t know about the draft root beer which is my favorite soda.

Food Truck Spotlight: Me So Hungry Too

6 Nov

Our Spotlight this week is from Jerry Sladewski of Me So Hungry Too . Thanks for taking the time to talk to us Jerry!

Me So Hungry Too Me So Hungry Too Sliders and Frys

Q: What sparked the interest to start Me So Hungry Too?

A: I’ve always loved food and cooking food for people. After many years of working just to pay bills, an opportunity presented itself to help get the first truck started in SF and I’ve been trucking along ever since.

Q: What kind of food does your truck serve and what inspired that choice of cuisine?

A: Burgers and sliders with a twist.

Q: What do you recommend first time visitors try at your truck?

A: A good item if you are hungry is our sampler because you get to try one of each slider. If you are just kinda hungry and you like gorgonzola cheese I would suggest the cali sliders and an order of our garlic or sweet potato fries.

Q: What’s the best part about serving at the SF State campus?

A: The people are really nice and seem to appreciate our twist on sliders and burgers.

Q: What’s something most people don’t know about your truck?

A: It used to be a space ship. Just kidding

Food Truck Spolight: Señor Sisig

5 Nov

This week’s spotlight is on Señor Sisig. Let’s just put it out there: Your favorite food truck was co-founded by an SF State Alumnus. Go Gators!

It all started in 2008 when SF State business graduate Evan Kidera visited Southern California and noticed how well food trucks were doing there. At the time, there were only a couple of taco trucks in San Francisco, Kidera said, but in Southern California he saw the popularity of trucks  specializing in fusion cuisine.

“I was amazed to see 30 people at a truck because at that time it was unheard of,” Kidera said.

When he returned he began brainstorming food truck ideas with his friend from high school and Senior Sisig co-founder, Gil Payumo, who at the time was working as a culinary chef; Kidera was working as a warehouse manager. The two began to combine Payumo’s family recipe for the traditional Filipino dish, sisig, with Mexican-American foods such as tacos and burritos. They found that the influence of Spanish flavors in both made for a great combination.

“The inspiration was automatic,” Kidera said. “It just went really well together.”

Señor Sisig can now be spotted throughout several locations in San Francisco and the Peninsula. They have developed a loyal following throughout the area and their popularity has even lead to an appearance on the Food Network’s “Diner’s, Drive-Ins and Dives.” Still, Kidera enjoys coming back to his alma mater to serve students and offer them something different for lunch.

“It adds to the value of being a student at SF State,” he said.
